All About Wedding Envelopes - Your Top Questions, Answered

How do you address a wedding envelope?

Envelopes may be hand addressed or printed. We offer traditional wedding envelope addressing guidelines on our blog.

Can I order personalized envelopes from LCI Paper?
Absolutely, LCI Paper has envelope printing services! Order just return addressing or full guest addressing in white, black, or 4-color ink.

Can I order custom size envelopes for wedding invitations?
Though you can cut an invitation card to fit into an envelope, you can’t alter an envelope to fit an invitation. Typically envelopes are offered in standard industry sizes only, which is why we recommend choosing your envelopes before you start designing your invites. We don’t offer custom size invitation envelopes, but we do offer envelopes in all the major wedding invitation sizes.

How do I know what size wedding invitation envelope to use?
Choose an envelope that is 1/8-1/4 inch larger than your card. This will allow room for you to insert your invites without so much space as to look sloppy. Learn more: How to choose the right size envelope

Can I just put my wedding invitations in the mailbox?
Technically yes, but we don’t recommend it. Before sending your invites, we recommend bringing one to the post office to determine accurate postage, and if possible, to hand cancel your invites. Read more envelope mailing tips here.

Can you send dark or colorful envelopes in the mail?
You sure can, so long as the address is legible and the postmark is visible. Read Can I Mail Dark Envelopes for more information on this.

Do I need to use inner and outer wedding invitation envelopes?
Inner and outer, or double envelopes are a tradition that some prefer to stick with and some don’t. It’s up to you! In modern times, some prefer to use just one envelope with proper addressing and avoid a second envelope all together.

Do envelopes for wedding invitations need to be super thick?
Thicker envelopes are often preferred for wedding stationery – usually 68lb text (100 gsm) and higher. To give you an idea, a regular bill mailing envelope is roughly a 24lb.

Are straight/square flap envelopes ok to use for wedding invites?
Absolutely! While many choose Baronial (pointed) or Euro (deep neck) flap envelopes for social stationery, straight flap envelopes are used for wedding invites too! Straight flap envelopes offer a clean, modern, unique look. When it comes down to what type of envelope to send your invites in, it all comes down to personal preference and style.
